Dental appliances are used to help manage a variety of conditions including temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) and sleep apnea. They come in several different forms including sports guards (mouth guards), night guards and oral sleep appliances. Each appliance serves a different purpose and is indicated in different situations to help protect the teeth, reduce TMJ and jaw discomfort, protect against tooth wear, or improve breathing. During your examination, your dentist will evaluate your teeth and will discuss your oral habits to best assess if a dental appliance is right for you. We will review the benefits of using one and discuss alternative and adjunctive approaches as well. Each appliance is custom made for the patient so that it has an ideal fit and comfort. If you think you need a dental appliance, please inform your dentist and they will help find the right one for you.
